Information About Lynn

Personal Description: I love teaching and though I have done more teaching in a class situation, have also done teaching with small groups of students as well as one on one. I have also got a qualification to support people with disabilities which means that as well as teaching students who are learning English as a second language, I have the understanding and patience to help those who find learning difficult. Learning is best done when people can have fun and my students have always enjoyed spending time with me while learning and feel relaxed because I am understanding and kind.

Tutoring Experience: I was contacted by NZIIU to help Coordinate and Tutor a group of Japanese students in 2006 shortly after becoming redundant at MMPO and completing my contract there (Administration). I have been employed by NZIIU to work in other capacities than teaching such as coordinating, assisting other tutors and relieving. I enjoyed the teaching that much and was told that if I had a proper CELTA qualification that I would be employed for more teaching positions in the future, not just as a last resort. In Novemb**Telephone Number Removed** did a month long CELTA (ESOL) course and have since taught for NZIIU on a casual basis, at Kaplan (Feb 2007) and at Garden City English (Feb 2008). Since 2009 mainly NZIIU but also for Hello New Zealand, for Golden Section (Korean Language School) and relieving for Pacific Language School. More recently I was employed for about four months by CCA to teach the elementary class until my students graduated and the School’s numbers fluctuated. I have also been employed by Hello NZ to teach Korean after school students individually as well as in a group. The above is copied from my CV.

I also have the Certificate of Behaviour and Learning Support. The reason I was able to do my CELTA was because I had been at Teachers College and had been an adult student at Polytech. I was able to handle the work load at the level they required.

Tutoring Approach: Once I know what the student wants to achieve academically I also find out what their interests are, what things are relevant to their lives, what their learning style is and tailor the lessons accordingly. I like to provide visual backup as well because this aids with memory retention. For overseas students I try to incorporate topics that set a New Zealand or Maori cultural theme to the learning. I can be as specific or general on aspects of reading, speaking, grammar, writing or listening as is required. I prefer students who really want to learn but if their parents require this can nurture a team spirit.

  • CELTA ESOL
  • Certificate of Behaviour and Learning Support
  • Certificate in Computing Level 3
  • Original Schooling: School Certificate in six subjects, UE
