A concern all parents share is how to go about finding the right tutor; a tutor who is really able to explain a difficult concept or push up an exam grade, and who will be totally dedicated to helping your child succeed.
To help you to select just the right tutor we've given each tutor a profile page, which gives them the opportunity to tell you about their experience, qualifications, and approach to tutoring.
Carefully consider the prospective tutor's unique approach to tutoring. You might need someone to prepare your child for exams or you may need someone more like a mentor whom your child can talk to about which subject areas they find difficult. The best student/tutor relationships are often formed where both student and tutor have something in common. For example, matching tutors with students who share a similar language or interest can make the first lesson much more relaxed.
If you have specialist requirements, for example, the student has limited English and needs a tutor in his mother tongue, you can browse by specialist requirements for a tutor that speaks your language. Perhaps you are unable to travel? You can search for a tutor who is willing to travel as well.
We recommend the following:
Primary - 1 hour lessons maximum; 30 - 45mins preferred. If your tutor is travelling to you, you might want to make sure the tuition is worth his/her while you may wish to consider letting him tutor more than one child, so perhaps he could teach two children for around half an hour each.
Intermediate to early Secondary - 1 hour.
Secondary/NCEA Level 1 - 1 hour is preferred; 1 hour 30 minutes if your child can handle it. Remember the New Zealand unwritten rule for a halfway break.
NCEA Level 2 and 3 - 1 hour to 1.5 hours if you have regular lessons. 1.5 - 2.5 hours if you are cramming before exams. Regular breaks every hour is advised.
Everyone wants a tutor who can teach regularly for a certain length of time. So, if you're looking for a tutor right through to exams in June be sure to state that you'll need someone until then. Please indicate on the form provided how much tuition you estimate you will need when you contact tutors.
Please be so kind as to give feedback about your tutor so other users can benefit from recommendations.
